Acupuncture is a philosophy of medicine that has been around for over two thousand years.  It incorporates all aspects of the human body into one system of science that has numerous applications in the modern medical community.  Using ancient techniques, acupuncture is able to effect the circulation, muscle structure and nervous system to bring about positive change in your health.

There is a concept in Chinese Medicine called Qi.  It is universally associated with the philosophy, medicine and practice of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture.  It is often described as an "energy" that circulates through the body in "meridians." There is such an aspect to the human body, but it is not the only thing that the word Qi describes. In ancient times, autopsies were not performed because it was considered to be against spiritual practices to desecrate the body.  In doing so, they labeled every structure in a particular part of the body as Qi. In modern times, we now know what is actually beneath the surface.  So not only is there a mysterious energy, but there is also the muscle, nervous and circulatory systems underneath. Acupuncture is able to alter any or all of these systems to maintain balance in the human body.

The tools of acupuncture are numerous. The most known would be the needle.  There is a lot of fear associated with the word needle. It can evoke memories of childhood immunity shots or painful blood tests. Acupuncture needles are different from western hypodermic needles by the fact that there is no need to inject a solution into the body. They are extremely thin and generally have little sensation upon insertion. When being manipulated to release tension or change other structures, the sensation is one of a dull ache or very quick buzz, which can travel to different parts of the limb. It is often described as being very pleasant. The end result is one of extreme relaxation and peacefulness.
